Python is a popular and widely used programming language. Many newbie developers choose it as the first language they want to learn because it is easy and intuitive. We were pleased to hear that developers can use the new Python-based programming language Eopsin to write Cardano smart contracts. TLDR A smart contract was written in Python and deployed to the Cardano testnet. Eopsin will make it possible to write smart contracts faster and this option will be open to a large number of developers. Eopsin Eopsin allows developers to write a Python 3 program and compile it into a Cardano smart contract assembly. Only a subset of Python will be used. The basic philosophy of the project is to create a compiler that allows developers to compile a valid Python program and use the result on-chain. The project is in the initial phase and one of the next steps will be integration with Pycardano which is a lightweight Cardano library written in Python. Compared to Plutus, smart contracts written in Python are more developer-friendly and faster to write. They seem to be more resource-efficient but the program tested was tiny. Further testing needs to be done to get exact numbers. Eopsin allows programmers to use existing Python tools leveraging syntax highlighting, debugging, unit testing, verification, and more will be available. If developers have experience with Python, they can install Eopsin with a single command. Deployment can be done very easily via Aiken (Cardano smart contract language and toolchain). The inventor, known as ImperatorLang, managed to deploy the first smart contract written in Python on the Cardano testnet and interact with it. Eopsin is the goddess of storage and wealth in Korean mythology and shamanism. Eopsin was believed to be a pitch-black snake that had ears. Conclusion Eopsin appears to be a very promising addition to the Cardano ecosystem. The ability to write a smart contract in the popular Python language and use all the tools available to do so opens Cardano up to a wide community of Python developers. From the available information, we are not able to judge if Eopsin is 100% ready for serious application development for the Cardano mainnet. However, it seems to us that it is possible to try it out and make up your own mind about it.
